Akamba Cultural Tour

Akamba Cultural Tour

The Akamba people migrated into their present homeland, which is east of Nairobi towards Tsavo National Park, about 200 years ago. They are only one of the 42 indigenous tribes of Kenya. They were exceptional traders participating in commerce from the coast to Lake Victoria and all the way up to Lake Turkana. Their main trade items were ivory, beer, honey, iron weapons, ornaments, and beads. Because they settled on arid land, they also traded for food with their neighbors the Maasai and the Kikuyu. During colonialism, the British respected them for their intelligence and fighting skill. Many were drafted into the Army and fought in World War One.

Kitui District is one of the nine districts in the Eastern Province of Kenya, 170 kilometers (107Miles) east of Nairobi. It is home to the Kamba speaking Bantu who are also in Machakos, Makueni and Mwingi districts. Around 98% of the land in Kitui is subject to drought. Crop failures and food shortages are common, and around 85% of the population has no source of potable water within 8 kilometers of their homes which often means having to walk 8 kilometer (5 Miles) to fetch water from a local river either using donkeys or women and small children to carry water on their back using plastic containers for the entire distance.

 Day 1

Upon arrival at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport you will be met by Tekko Representatives and transferred to the Hilton Hotel for overnight.

 Day 2

After breakfast you will depart for Kitui in the Eastern Province via Kitui Town for lunch. Thereafter proceed to your Host family for dinner and overnight. (B,L,D)

Although a large part of Kamba culture has become westernized, and the large towns and villages have greatly increased in number (the Kamba population itself is now five times larger than it was in the 1930s), the traditional pattern of family homesteads persists, and is one of the few traditional social structures to have survived the twentieth-century. Other forms of social and political structures - such as clans, councils of elders, and age-sets - now appear to be primarily historical even though they are sporadically practiced. (B,L,D)

 Day 3

This day you will stay with your host family and you will be able to participate in their days activities. (B,L,D)

 Day 4

After breakfast you will be picked by your van and have a tour to local market. Kamba people are known for their expertise in wood carving and also basket weaving.

You will also take a tour to the famous Nzambani Rock. The Nzambani rock is one of the most popular scenic attractions within and around Kitui District. The rock is located about 15Miles from Kitui town and in a clear weather day, it can be seen as far as 50Miles away. What makes this rock unique is the story behind it that has been passed along from one generation to another. There is an allusion to the mythical Ivia ya Nzambani (the Nzambani Rock), which is said to be capable of changing your gender if you run around it seven times none stop. In the afternoon you will be entertained by the Kamba traditional dancers. Thereafter there will be a farewell party in your honour where you will participate in slaughtering of a goat and preparing the barbecue. Later in the evening transfer to your host family for overnight. (B,L,D)

Day 5

After breakfast depart for Nairobi Via Machakos town for lunch. On arrival check-in at Hilton Hotel for overnight. (B,L)

You will be picked up and transferred to the international airport for your homeward bound flight.
